LED lifetimes are rated differently than other competing technology.
Rated lifetime of Fluorescent and HID only tell half the story - literally! That's because lifetimes are expressed as a Mean-Time-to-Failure. This means that after a given lifetime rating, say 30,000 hours, half the bulbs of a given facility are burned out. That's a total average light reduction of 50%.
LEDs do not fail catastrophically but rather dim over time. LED lifetimes are stated in L-70 ratings. This means after a given lifetime period, the LED will have faded to 70% of its original lumen output. That's a total average reduction of only 30%.
